Cardinal Sean O’Malley spoke with a classic Vatican poker face and as a Franciscan con-artist using the big conniving word “IF” in CBS 60 Minutes – when he declared his new famous Catholic religious fairy tale, “If I started a church, I'd love to have women priests” – thereby deceiving idiots Americans particularly stupid Catholic women. O’Malley’s con line sounds similar to that of a married man telling his mistress, “If I started as a single guy and if I wasn’t married, I’d love to marry you”. Notice the nonchalant use of the word “love” by both con-artists – one is a religious cardinal and the other a layman. Many of that ‘other woman’ actually wait for their dream wedding, even waiting for a lifetime, but their con-artist lover – the two-timing husband never went through the hustle of the legal process of divorce and hence never married his stupid mistress. Yet there’s a better chance – and it has happened before – that a philandering lay man will keep his word of “love” and leave his wife to legally marry his mistress – than for the religious duplicitous ‘prince of the church’ Cardinal O’Malley to leave the Catholic Church (made of a powerful hierarchy of all-male gays misogynists oligarchy) and legally start a new church with women priests – whom (as he professed on television before the world to see with his Vatican poker face) he’d “love to have”. It’s mindboggling how idiots Americans Catholics are buying Cardinal O’Malley’s CBS con-artist’s lines of fairy tales and Vatican Pied Pipers are all over the media praising him and brainwashing idiots Catholics (see news compilation below). Perhaps, to fulfill his con words in his lifetime, Cardinal O’Malley can save himself some logistics and speed up matters in his old age by joining his relative Christian church, the Anglicans, who already have women priests – whom he’d “love to have”.

Within a few hours after CBS 60 Minutes’ Vatican propaganda, inside the Vatican (fake country), Pope Francis also did his own Opus Dei Beast PR Stunt of the Day with a parallel con-artist line – (which he proclaimed at a colloquium organized by the CDF Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith) – “I wish to confirm, according to the wishes of the Lord, that in September of 2015 I will go to Philadelphia for the World Meeting of Families.” (What he meant was, “I wish to confirm the Vatican CBS American propaganda about me”. Cardinal O’Malley uses “Jesus and vocation” to justify misogynists’ priesthood

O’Malley is an impostor of Christ (just like Pope Francis) and so he used Christ as reason why women cannot be priests. He said, “Christ would never ask us to do something immoral.” What this leads to and means is that – it would be immoral for women to be priests – therefore, Christ would NEVER ask for women to be priests. Catholics who thought Boston Cardinal Sean O’Malley’s remarks about Kansas City Bishop Robert Finn’s suitability for office were provocative have another interesting comment to ponder: If he were to start a church, he would “love to have women priests.”

In an interview with “60 Minutes” on CBS that producers said took more than a year for them to persuade him to do, O’Malley seemed troubled by reporter Norah O’Donnell’s question as to whether the exclusion of women from the Church hierarchy was “immoral.”

O’Malley paused, then said, “Christ would never ask us to do something immoral. It’s a matter of vocation and what God has given to us.”

CHICAGO — Back in 1997, journalist Jonathan Kwitny published a biography of Pope John Paul II called “Man of the Century.” The idea was that the biography of John Paul cut across all the great dramas of the 20th century, from Nazism and Communism to the upheaval in the Catholic Church caused by the Second Vatican Council.

By the same logic, one could argue that Cardinal Francis George of Chicago was the American churchman of the late 20th and early 21st centuries, because there’s almost no story in which he wasn’t a lead actor.

George played a key role in pushing through a reform of Catholic worship in the English language, adopting translations closer to the Latin originals and, in general, a more reverent and traditional style. He was the architect of the US bishops’ battles with the Obama administration over health care reform, and more broadly in defense of religious freedom, during his three-year term as president of the bishops’ conference.

George was also the lead advocate for the American bishops when their new zero tolerance policy on sex abuse seemed dead on arrival in Rome, eventually making it stick over significant Vatican resistance. To boot, George voted in the conclaves that gave the Catholic Church both Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis.

Boston Cardinal Seán O'Malley, a key advisor to Pope Francis, was featured in a lengthy interview on the U.S. television program 60 Minutes Sunday night.

The interview covered a wide range of topics: from O'Malley's relationship with the pope, to his feelings about the Vatican's investigations of U.S. women religious, to his thoughts on the possibility of women's ordination to the priesthood.

One revelation? O'Malley and the pope regularly communicate via fax.

"Usually ... we fax," O'Malley told CBS' Norah O'Donnell. That method, he said, is "very quick and efficient."

That prompted O'Donnell to respond: "Most people think texting is quicker than faxing."

Cardinal Sean O’Malley’s stunningly candid “60 Minutes” interview — tackling thorny subjects such as clergy sex abuse and ordination of women in the shadow of St. Peter’s — has made Boston’s archbishop the American face of an extraordinary papacy that takes tough questions and embraces criticism, in stark contrast to centuries of Vatican custom.
There was a “certain rawness” to O’Malley’s answers to Norah O’Donnell that typifies the papacy of Francis, said Dennis Doyle, professor of religious studies at the University of Dayton, a prominent Catholic research university in Ohio. “I think that there were signs that he was not completely prepped on what to say even. We weren’t getting canned answers on every issue. I do think that signals something about what Pope Francis is trying to model, and calling for.”
Boston College theologian the Rev. James Bretzke said O’Malley, the pope’s closest American advisor, has “gauged that now is the time when he can be a little more forthright.” Under prior papacies, he said, such candor “would have been certainly a nonstarter.”
Bretzke said what he saw was “confronto Americano” — or frank American-style discussion — which had largely been antithetical to the Vatican.

“I wish to confirm, according to the wishes of the Lord, that in September of 2015 I will go to Philadelphia for the World Meeting of Families,” Pope Francis said on Monday. It’s the first official confirmation of the pope’s long-expected visit to the United States, the first of his papacy.
Francis was speaking at a colloquium organized by the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith. In attendance? The Archbishop of Philadelphia Charles J. Chaput, who has enthusiastically spoken of the Pope’s anticipated visit in the past.
On Monday, Chaput told the Associated Press that he “applauded the loudest” at Francis’s announcement at the conclusion of his address to the conference.

According to the Philadelphia Archdiocese, Francis is expected to arrive on September 25, 2015, NBC Philadelphia reported. Officials are expecting up to 2 million people for a public mass held on the Ben Franklin Parkway two days later, and tens of thousands for the conference itself.

Pope Francis plans to visit Philadelphia in 2015, the pontiff announced today. It would be his first trip to the United States as pope.
The pope made the announcement when he addressed participants at a Vatican conference on traditional marriage.
The trip, expected for late September, would coincide with the World Meeting of Families organized by the Catholic Church, a world event that will take place in Philadelphia that focuses on strengthening family bonds.
“I wish to confirm according to the wishes of the Lord, that in September of 2015, I will go to Philadelphia for the World Meeting of Families,” Francis, 77, speaking in Italian, told the crowd at the Vatican. “Thank you for your prayers with which you accompany my service to the Church. Bless you from my heart.”

There’s more talk about the possible ouster of embattled KC Bishop Robert Finn. But it’s only talk. And it’s a distraction that buttresses an already unhealthy complacency in the church.
Suppose, after centuries of widespread child sex crimes and selfish cover ups, one pope finally does oust one bishop for complicity in clergy sex crimes. That will be encouraging. But that will only a very tiny drop of reform in an enormous bucket of horror. It will be the smallest of baby steps.
Finn's departure will, in the short term, if it happens, make some adults happier. By itself, it won't, in the long term, make many kids safer.
Keep in mind that dozens of Kansas City Catholic employees are concealing or have concealed clergy sex crimes. So it's irresponsible for anyone to get complacent. Protecting predators and endangering kids is a deeply-rooted and long-standing pattern in the Catholic hierarchy. It didn't start with one man and won't stop with one man.
The dozens of current and recent Catholic employees in Kansas City who knew of or suspected clergy sex crimes and kept quiet should be ashamed of themselves. They should be at least suspended – or more likely fired – by Finn or his replacement. But that almost certainly will never happen.

There are now, according to BishopAccountability.org, 25 publicly accused Kansas City area child molesting clerics. That's a fraction of the real total. Finn alone did not enable, ignore and conceal their crimes. Sadly, he has had and still has plenty of help continuing the cover ups.

So vigilance, not complacency, is needed now. It's crucial that those who see, suspect or suffer clergy sex crimes and cover ups in KC keep finding the strength to get help, protect kids, call police, expose wrongdoers, deter wrongdoing, and start healing. Let’s not waste precious time that could help precious kids by idle speculation and wild hopes that may or may not ever be fulfilled.

On the cusp of a new Archbishop of Chicago hand-picked by Pope Francis taking office on Tuesday, the CBS news program “60 Minutes” is set to offer a reminder Sunday night that one doesn’t have to go all the way to the Windy City to find the premier face and voice of the Francis era in American Catholicism.
Boston, thank you very much, will do just fine.
In a provocative new interview, Cardinal Sean P. O’Malley of Boston tackles head-on two issues that have been sources of chronic controversy in the American Church: clerical sexual abuse and an ongoing Vatican investigation of American nuns.
On both fronts, O’Malley doesn’t pull punches in espousing what will be seen as strong reform positions in line with the pope’s vision and direction.
According to excerpts of the interview released in advance, O’Malley confirms that Bishop Robert Finn of Kansas City, Missouri, wouldn’t even be allowed to teach Sunday school in O’Malley’s archdiocese.

During her interview with Cardinal Seán O'Malley -- on a windy rooftop overlooking St. Peter's Square in Rome -- CBS News' Norah O'Donnell says it was "tough to concentrate" while discussing the topic of child sex abuse.
Tough, O'Donnell says, because as she was talking with the cardinal, she also had to contend with extremely windy conditions, the blaring horns of Rome's traffic below and the bells of St. Peter's Basilica ringing out every 15 minutes.
Amidst the noise, O'Donnell kept her focus on the interview: "I'm thinking of not only what I want to ask the cardinal next, I'm thinking about what he's saying and following up on what he's saying. I'm thinking: Do I need to re-ask a question because there was a truck that honked in the middle of my question?"
Following O'Donnell's interview with the cardinal, she talked with 60 Minutes Overtime about her impressions of O'Malley. "It's clear in talking to him that he's very close with Pope Francis," she says.

The world witnessed the humility and greatness of the Catholic Church last night on the nationally celebrated “60 Minutes” news magazine, as Cardinal Sean O’Malley spoke as a new American voice for the Vatican and we must believe for Pope Francis, from St. Peter’s Square.
Addressing a nationwide American audience — in a venue and in a manner that will be noticed by Catholics worldwide — Cardinal Sean reminded us that we must not be only faithful to God, but to each other.
We also witnessed the special role that Boston plays in the Catholic Church in the world today.
Cardinal Sean not only addressed forthrightly the Church’s callous role in its failure to protect innocent children from clergy sex abuse, but for the first time pointed the finger from Rome at a bishop who failed to act to protect children and bring accountability to those Church leaders responsible.
I was particularly moved by Cardinal Sean’s acknowledgement of the future role of religious women in the Church.

SouthCoast's Roman Catholics have reason to feel pride and reassurance about their connection to their church, the result in part of the humble and effective work of Cardinal Sean O'Malley.
O'Malley revealed in an interview with "60 Minutes" correspondent Nora O'Donnell both the quiet strength and deep commitment to faith and Christian morality that endeared him to Catholics in the Diocese of Fall River, which he led in the early days of the horrible clergy abuse scandal that has rocked the church both in the United States and abroad.
In part because of his effective work in Fall River and then in south Florida, O'Malley was given leadership of the Boston Archdiocese as it sought to deal with the far-reaching scandal that nearly bankrupted the church morally and financially.
In a light moment during his interview with O'Donnell, he referred to the Boston archdiocese as "a fixer-upper" when he succeeded disgraced Cardinal Bernard Law and personally apologized to the victims of clerical sex offenders, then settled hundreds of lawsuits that had been filed against the archdiocese. Those actions and his decision to sell the archdiocese's palatial estate for $100 million helped begin the process of reformation and healing that continues today.
He also demonstrated moral clarity during the interview when he discussed the Vatican's handling of a case involving Bishop Robert Finn of the Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph in Missouri. Finn waited six months before notifying police about the Rev. Shawn Ratigan, whose computer contained hundreds of lewd photos of young girls taken in and around churches where he worked.

The Crisis Pope Francis Faces

1. A Ray of Hope In A Crisis of Trust — A Holy Mess: Pope Francis says Catholics should “create a mess” to help him promote changes in the Catholic Church. The Catholic majority are pleased for now; although many are skeptical. Some see a bright ray of hope shining into the crisis of trust triggered by Church scandals. Others think the window of opportunity for hopeful light from Pope Francis will close soon if he is not prophetic and transparent. Indeed, some even think the Vatican’s current “holy mess” will be its final mess.
2. Yet, Francis has so far offered few indications about concrete changes he really wants. Many Church leaders seem fearful of any changes. Yet, many Catholics and others are finally pressing for permanent changes. They have by now seen Vatican misconduct up close and too often. They now also understand better that many of the Vatican’s frequently ambiguous, if not vague, biblical and historical basic sources supporting papal power have been overplayed, if not misused. These permanent changes may differ ultimately from what many in the Vatican now want. As the “infallible Supreme Pontiff” for millions of Catholics, Pope Francis has the best papal opportunity in many years, if not centuries, to fix the broken Catholic Church. This may also be the final papal opportunity to clean up the “holy mess”. Time will soon tell.
3. This crisis has led to one papal resignation already. Pope Francis appears for many reasons to be the Vatican’s best and last chance to lead on initiating overdue Church changes. Pressures beyond Vatican control can be expected to compel more severe changes if Francis fails to act effectively and transparently. This has already begun to happen with respect to Vatican finances, as a result of the continuing European governmental investigations of multiple misdeeds involving both the Vatican Bank and the Vatican’s own significant portfolio assets. Prospects for criminal prosecutions of Catholic Church officials have seemingly caused the Vatican to focus on overdue reforms in ways that earlier financial penalties and shameful publicity had rarely done before. As with corporate criminal executives worldwide, prosecution risk is generally a uniquely effective deterrent to future crimes by senior leaders.
4. Almost 150 years ago, facing a similar crisis, Pope Pius IX refused to initiate overdue changes to his arbitrary and ineffective leadership of his Kingdom of the Papal States in central Italy. His key misguided “fix” was to push to be declared “infallible” in July 1870. Two months later, he militarily lost the Kingdom completely to Italian nationalists. Traditional papal protectors like France and Austria-Hungary stood by and passively watched, unwilling to support further papal mismanagement and capriciousness. Will Pope Francis make a similar mistake like Pius IX did by misjudging his precarious position?

Please don't blame your sexism on Jesus...

I understand some hearts are aflutter after Cardinal Sean O'Malley's recent interview on the US television show "60 Minutes." During the interview Sean hinted that he felt convicted-criminal-for-failure-to-report-child-abuse-and-active-Opus-Dei-bishop-of-Kansas-City, Robert Finn, maybe shouldn't be an active bishop anymore. Rather than rejoicing, I find myself disillusioned that a) O'Malley is the first of the more than 5,000 worldwide bishops to open his mouth on this...over TWO YEARS AFTER Finn's conviction and b) this STILL has not been addressed by the pope. Talk about a "no-brainer" action to take...
In Roman Catholic Clergy time, perhaps two years is the equivalent of breaking the sound barrier for speed, but to me, it seems slow and underwhelming. After all, I repeat: Finn is still the active bishop of an entire diocese despite Sean's groundbreaking public criticism. If Finn had ordained a woman, he would have been relieved of his duties before the sun set on the next day. It doesn't speak well to papal priorities that the welfare of children is something to ponder for years before acting.
Sean also said the Vatican's handling of the US nun's visitation was a "disaster." Thanks, Sean...Glad you caught on to that one too, albeit a little slower than the Finn situation.
But what really caught my attention were Sean's statements about women and Jesus. Here's a synopsis:
Reporter Norah O’Donnell asked if excluding women from the hierarchy was “immoral.” O'Malley replied, “Christ would never ask us to do something immoral. It’s a matter of vocation and what God has given to us."

The Church is in no position to teach morality

Reading reports of the situation involving Fr Charles Fenech reminds me of the South American soap operas to which my late grandmother was addicted – ‘Quando Si Ama’, ‘Sentieri’, that sort of thing – only with an added dose of Miley Cyrus-style pornography that my late grandmother would certainly not have appreciated one tiny bit.

In fact, I sometimes wonder how people like her would react to the details now emerging from this case. My grandparents – all four of whom were nothing if not totally devoted to the Catholic Church – all passed away long before the first scandal rocked that institution to its foundations.

They were not around to see the aftermath of the Dar San Guzepp scandal, which resulted in two priests incarcerated in 2011 for abuse of minors. They also missed out on the divorce referendum in the same year, which – though unrelated to any particular scandal – graphically underscored a chasm that had opened up between their beloved Church and the rest of the population.

But surely there must still be people out there – many thousands, in fact – whose attitude towards the Church and all that it represents is identical to that of my grandparents’ entire generation. It was an attitude which regarded obedience to the Church as a virtue in itself, and which (as I discovered on the rare attempts I bothered trying) would brook absolutely no question of the same Church’s moral authority in all matters: be they spiritual or temporal.

And the Church profited much from their unquestioning obedience, too. It was the same attitude that resulted in a Constitution which simply pronounces ‘the religion of Malta’ to be ‘the Roman Catholic Apostolic religion’… leaving no room at all for a small but rapidly-growing non-Catholic population, who by the same token are made to feel ‘less Maltese’ than their Catholic peers.

More worryingly, the same Constitution also empowers the Church with the ‘right and duty’ to ‘teach which principles are right and which are wrong’ in Maltese society. Well, recent events have helped throw this Constitutional proviso into some kind of perspective. How can the Church retain a legal privilege to ‘teach right from wrong’… when there is no discernible morality of any kind in the same Church’s behaviour when faced with allegations of abuse (and smut) involving its own members?

I won’t comment on the allegations concerning Dominican Fr Fenech in themselves – these still need to be proven in a court of law – but there is much to be said about how these allegations were handled when first brought to the Church’s attention… EIGHT YEARS AGO.

Gozo Bishop Mario Grech, for instance, now tells us – but significantly, only now – that all such cases should be immediately referred to the police. The question arises as a matter of course: why, then, did the Church he represents not immediately refer the case to the police, when alerted to the Fenech allegations in 2006?

Auxiliary Bishop Mgr Charles Scicluna went one better. He claimed, live on TV, that he had no idea about this case at all, and only got to know about it through the media (i.e., last week). The Malta Independent went on to publish a letter, addressed to Mgr Scicluna in January 2013, in which the Response Team (more of which in a bit) informed him in no uncertain terms of what was going on. How are we to explain the discrepancy between what Scicluna said on TV, and what we now know actually happened?

But let’s give him the benefit of the doubt. (Hey, his Church already benefits from Constitutional privileges… one more ‘benefit’ can hardly hurt, can it?). The Curia now claims that Scicluna did know – because, let’s face it, they can’t exactly claim otherwise any more – but his ‘shock’ was directed at the fact that the Response Team had taken eight years without reaching a conclusion.

“Since the matter was being investigated by the Response Team, there could be no doubt that the Church authorities, including Bishop Scicluna, knew about the allegation, but they had to wait for the outcome of the Response Team investigation before taking any action.”

Again, it is significant that this admission comes only now, after the publication of that letter… and not, for instance, when identical claims were made in the same newspaper the preceding Saturday. But even if we accept that answer… the rest of the argument lies in tatters anyway.

They had to ‘wait for the outcome of the Response Team before taking any action’? What nonsense. The Response Team is a non-legally constituted, private tribunal that applies its own laws and procedures to any given case. Its ‘rulings’ – on the rare occasions when it actually reaches any – are not recognised at law; they are clearly no substitute for a State-administered justice procedure that is supposedly applicable to everyone equally.

The anomaly becomes all the more striking just by substituting the word ‘Church’ for any other institution of your choice. Let’s imagine the headmaster of a private school receives information that one of his teachers is sexually molesting students. It would be absurd – insulting, even – for the school to set up its own tribunal, and ‘try’ the teacher on its own turf without involving the authorities in any way.

Nobody would accept that from a school; nor, for that matter, from a bank or football club or NGO of any kind. Just imagine if this fictitious organisation also added: “Oh, and we chose not to involve the police because we wanted to settle the matter internally, using our own non-legal procedures, and couldn’t take any action until those procedures had run their course…”

Moreover, the Curia’s response also blatantly contradicts the Gozo Bishop’s earlier point about ‘immediately reporting all cases to the police’. But the most disturbing aspect is that all these reactions simply overlook the most damning circumstance of this case: Fr Fenech was allowed to remain in his position of public trust, despite allegations (by five different women) that he was abusing that position for his own sexual gratification.
Even acting on the principle of ‘innocent until proven guilty’, the standard procedure in all analogous cases would be to suspend him pending the outcome of the inquiry. Most self-respecting suspects would tender their resignation themselves, to prevent further harm to the institution.

Clearly, these diverse and contradictory reactions do not add up. What amazed me more, however, was the reaction by former Archbishop Paul Cremona to reports that he himself had offered one of the victims a sum of money to keep her trap shut.

Mgr Cremona has so far hotly denied the allegation that he attempted to bribe the victim of a crime – which would be a serious criminal offence, if committed by anyone who is not the Archbishop of a non-secular country – but he did not deny having been approached about the case, and therefore that he has known all about these allegations for years.

Chronology helps to put things into focus. The report to the Response Team was filed in 2006. Cremona became Archbishop two years later in 2008. He stepped down from that post around three weeks ago, after spending six years in the role. What did he do about the case in all this time? As I recall, he spent much of those six years lecturing the rest of us about morality and the ‘family values’.

Even before the divorce campaign – where he argued tirelessly about the ‘indissolubility of marriage’, even as Fr Fenech allegedly urged married women to leave their husbands and abandon their marital home – he had started his entire career with an unbridled attack on secularism. His inaugural homily on September 8, 2008 had even compared secularism – the separation of Church and State, please note – to Nazism and the threat of the Ottoman Turk in 1565.
Cremona separately argued that: “The stronger this ideology [secularism] becomes, the more difficult it will be for one to live his personal values. It will become more difficult for parents to pass on the values they believe in to their children...it will be more difficult for young people to make free choices when they are surrounded by wrong messages and influences.”

Those words must be haunting him now. What sort of ‘messages and influences’ are these ‘young people’ now getting from the country’s religious authorities? How are they any better than the ‘wrong message’ that Church and State should be kept separate, for the good of both Church and State?

But the smouldering question is another. It is perhaps reasonable to ask what Cremona’s motivation actually was at the time. ‘Separation of Church and State’ is certainly a threat… to the Church. It would inevitably whittle away its Constitutional role as moral torchbearer for the nation. It is in fact the absence of secularism in Malta that originally (the Original Sin, if you like) permitted the State to accord a ‘right and duty’ to the Church to meddle with the State’s own affairs.

This might explain why the former Archbishop dedicated so much energy to battling ‘secularism’ on all fronts, yet simultaneously took no action at all over a serious case of abuse involving a clergyman. It tells you everything you need to know about that institution’s moral compass.
From this perspective, one must also question the wisdom of retaining Constitutional privileges which bestow upon this institution a national monopoly over such concepts of ‘right’ and ‘wrong’. We’ve all seen how the Church interprets ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ when applied to itself. I for one will certainly not take lessons in morality from an institution that wears and discards its own morals like an article of clothing… for external effect only.

A very valid argument. However, for consistency, one would have to
extend it to its logical consequence. That is, we cannot accept that the
police enforce the law, since some of its members break it. And we
cannot recognise the authority of the Courts to administer justice, since
some of its members have broken very basic tenets of justice. Which
basically leaves us in a situation of "each to his own". And where would
that lead to? In truth, society can only function because its members
can conceive the idea an institition (be it civil or religious) exists
independently of its component members. It is a case of being greater
than the sum of its parts

"Let he who has not sinned cast the first stone" is a tenet of your religion. It has absolutely no application in a civil society. Members of court do not routinely break basic tenets of justice. Police do not routinely break laws. Catholic Bishops do routinely cover up child molesting. All over the world. And they cannot claim that because everyone sins, they should be allowed to let their priests rape children. That is completely absurd. Thankfully, I have not read your argument as an affirmative defense in any court case, since your argument would cause the jury to immediately convict your client.

However, the police and judiciary are appointed by a democratically elected parliament, and subject to it - if they do not do their job, or aid and abet the very actions that they should be acting against, those at the helm can be censured or replaced, and if the government does not do this, it itself can be replaced (at least in principle). The Church is subject to no public censure whatsoever, not even nominally, yet it still makes demands which it expects the public to conform to, demands which it breaks itself - and the followers of the Church have no power to stop it.

There’s an elephant quietly sitting in the nave that everyone on all sides of the clergy sex abuse crisis have been diligently ignoring, even the victims themselves. No clergy or even would-be reformers have really remarked on it yet, although it should be more obvious with each and every sad story. More importantly, it is a troubling issue that touches on the very heart and soul of Catholicism.

The monstrous truth is simply this: what the clergy sex abuse crisis clearly demonstrates is that the sacramental system has failed.

This is not just a case of hierarchical reneging of responsibility.There’s more to this than some bad apples. This is nothing that a few reforms can fix, some screening of seminarians or more pastoral responses by bishops. It is nothing less than a fundamental challenge to the entire Catholic Church, and it shows that the spiritual principles the whole structure is supposedly based on simply do not work.

Think about it. The offenders here are Roman Catholic priests, highly trained men. But unlike other professionals, these men are supposedly set apart and dedicated to lives of the spirit. They claim to have the power to forgive sins and make God appear.

They not only administer the sacraments to others, but also receive them themselves daily. That means, among other things, frequent confession to other priests. Moreover, many of these men belong to religious orders or are otherwise under close spiritual direction. They are supposed to confide everything to their confessors and superiors and to obey them unquestioningly.

So what went wrong? When an abusive priest goes to confession, does he start, “Bless me, father, for I have sinned: I buggered an altar boy three times this week”? And does the confessor tell him to say 3 Our Fathers and 4 Hail Marys and not to do it again?

According to their own theory, confessors have the power to forgive sins, but also to refuse to do so if sorrow is insufficient. Moreover, they are to appoint penances – if they wish, they can require satisfaction or significant signs of reform from the penitent before absolution. Some sins – such as solicitation for sex in the confessional – are even deemed so serious that only higher prelates, sometimes only the Pope or his appointed delegate can forgive them.

Yet the abusers continue to abuse. So are the sexually active priestslying to their confessors? This would mean that not only do the perpetrating priests remain in a state of mortal sin and are automatically excommunicated, they perform the sacraments in that state which is itself a grave sacrilege.

Or, even worse, are all the abusive priests linked? Do they only go to confession to like-minded perps who will understand? Is there then an organized network of sexually perpetrating priests, all busily enabling each other? This adds collusion and conspiracy to the sinand would indicate that the very structure itself is rotten to the core.

The evidence available suggests that perhaps both scenarios are true to varying degrees in different situations. Either way, however, the result is much the same.

The sacraments are meant to unite believers with Christ. Not just to remove the accumulations of sin like the weekly laundry, but togradually improve the recipient. They are intended to sanctify and uplift the faithful, increase devotion to God, charity to fellow humans, and moral stamina in the face of evil.

If the sacraments actually worked like this, wouldn’t we hear ennobling stories of clerical reform, of some molester inspired to truly repent and devote himself to the cause? But rather, the stories are depressingly the same, of priests caught time and again, transferred, treated, and now finally, laicized often against their will, with no regret or even acknowledgement of their evil.

What this means, each person must decide in their own conscience. But perhaps the fall off in confessions over the years itself tells the story. Why should anyone, lay or not, risk a ritual that seems so impotent in promoting reform and may, instead of granting grace, actually expose them to greater human wickedness?

Looking Left: No tangible progress in combating Catholic sexual abuse

It has been almost one full year since Pope Francis was elected to take Pope Benedict XVI’s place in the Vatican. He has been hailed by both the Catholic community and its critics for his openness to bringing much needed reform to the outdated ethos of the church. His forthcoming attitude has alleviated some concerns about how the Vatican can reconcile its beliefs with those of its more youthful and liberal followers. However, for all of his efforts to reconnect, Francis has failed to truly address the patterns of sexual abuse and exploitation by clerics supported by the Vatican.
In a recent interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, Francis made comments defending the church’s response to reports of sexual abuse, claiming that it is “the only public institution to have acted with transparency and responsibility. No other has done more. And, the church is the only one to be attacked.” It is true that the church has been under scrutiny for quite some time — last month, a UN committee issued a report criticizing the Church’s policies on a range of issues, calling for the removal of any known sexual abusers and release of records of sexual assault allegations against clerics.

It is also true that he has publicly acknowledged the problem, and in December he created a committee to evaluate methods to protect sexually abused children and more effectively screen men seeking to become priests for sexual deviance. This committee, however, is strictly advisory, and there is almost no information available regarding how it has gone about measuring the breadth of the problem. The “transparency” Francis speaks of does not exist.
